It was a perfect day; the sunshine warmed my face, whilst my children slept contentedly after a morning of jumping the waves, my hunger had been quenched with fresh spaghetti washed down with some local chilled wine. I was in the Sicilian town of Cefalu. I had been sharing the last week with probable the most famous and likeable self-made billionaires on the planet, Richard Branson. His autobiography is exceptional so here is a paragraph that I sure he won’t mind me quoting. We had £500m in the bank… People asked me “why don’t you have some fun now?” but they were missing the point. As far as I was concerned, this was fun. Fun is at the core of the way I do business and it’s been to everything I’ve done from the outset. More than any other element, fun is the secret of Virgin’s success…Even when I asked to define my “business philosophy”, I generally won’t do so, because I don’t believe it can be taught as if it were a recipe. There aren’t ingredients and techniques that will guarantee success. Parameters exist that, if followed, will ensure a business can continue, but you cannot clearly define our business success and then bottle as you would a perfume. It is not that simple: to be successful, you have to be out there, you have to hit the ground running; and, if you have a good team around you and more than your fair share of luck, you might make something happen. But you certainly can’t guarantee it just by following someone else’s formula So till next week have fun doing what you do, do it your way, get great people around you and keep trying new things So I wish you good luck and if you fancy an excellent holiday then head over to Sicily with good book.
