Many of us, about 100 million in the US and 9 million in the UK, set a New Year resolution or two every year?

I love the idea because its a great opportunity to think of a small repetitive action, that can improve our lives or make us more successful.

However unless you can improve your odds, you only have a 50% chance of keeping it up till the end of January , and the likelihood that you'll keep it up all year is just 10%. Now I hate to fail, as I'm sure you do, so I thought I dig around and see if I could find us some help.

The help I found came from a year-long study of 3,000 people by  Professor Richard Wiseman (University of Hertfordshire, England)

Richard found that men were 22% more likely to succeed when they set goals for themselves, such as losing a pound a week rather than just saying they wanted to lose weight.  Richard says "Think through exactly what you will do, where you will do it, and at what time." for example instead of planning to go to the gym twice a week you should plan to go at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Richard also found that women were 10% more likely to succeed if they tell other women, they can tell friends or family. Richard says women might be reluctant to tell others about their resolutions, but benefit from the social support provided by friends and family once they have made their goals public.

As a final comment for both sexes Richard found that if you revisit a past resolution then this dramatically reduced your chance of success. So try and find something new to target or at least find a new approach to the old problem you want to action.

If you need an more encourage there 's new site on the internet called www.betchaican.co.uk

It allows you to make a record of your resolution, you can promise yourself a reward if your successful or make a donation to charity if you don't. Not only that, but you can nominate 'bet-buddies' . If you want to encourage someone else, you can challenge them to achieve a goal with you as the provider of the reward! So why not give it a go and best of all its completely free!

So I'm off to set a New Years resolution, which for once I might actually be able achieve

Will you? Till next week betchaican.
